This article is long time coming. We actually forgot to include it into our site when we made the server switch a while back. (Oops!) So now I will write it new from scratch. I hope this article will both help and clear up a few questions for our readers. |
Consecration ChaptersWhat is Consecrating? Why Do I Need to Consecrate? How Long Will it Last? What is Banishing? How Do I Perform Banishing? |
What is Consecrating? The best way to try to describe it is to purify or remove unwanted lingering energies from a person, place or thing. It also means to cleanse and purify an item or persons. You can also banishing negative feelings or vibrations from a tool or an area. Your sacred space (Magick circle) can and should be consecrated before performing rituals in the area. Whether it is in your home or someone else’s home should be done prior to magickal working. Some will say that outside rituals do not need to be consecrated before rituals. Well this is kind of true. However I will always smudge the area before opening any circle regardless of the energies good or bad.
Why Do I Need to Consecrate? There are two main reasons for consecrating your ritual items. One is to remove the vibrations of other people who have handled (touched) your ritual tools. You do not want everyone else’s energies lingering or attaching to the magickal tools only you will be using. I know there are some people who say this does not matter. I believe and most witches will agree with me on this that it does matter. Your ritual items should only be handled by you or your coven members if you are involved in a group or coven. The Coven or Grove may have a special "community" sword or besom. Everyone within that group may use or handle the tool from time to time. The reason for not letting other people touch your items is to keep it sacred and free of their emotions or energy. Think of it like a sponge. It can and will pick up floating energy or auras. It will absorb yours and anyone else’s baggage when touched. Everything in your home can pick up floating energies. If you and your partner/spouse have an argument then those negative energies are released into the air. They will be absorbed by everything in its path. Both positive and negative energies can transfer to just about anything in site whether you can see it or not. So this would make it a very good reason to smudge/cleanse your home quite often. In fact, you should consecrate your home before you move into it and when you decide to move into somewhere else. In this way you will be removing unwanted energies you and family members might leave behind for the new tenants and as you move into a new and different home the previous owners will be leaving you their negative thoughts or energies as well. So be sure to consecrate the entire house. As with all marriages or relationships negative attitudes or fights can and will arise on occasions. So you may want to re-consecrate your home more often, perhaps once a month if you are in a stressful relationship. The other reason would be to personalize this new tool and make it just yours. This will also increase and add to your personal powers. You should become close and very familiar with your tools that will be used to direct energy or divine the future. So just consecrate each new tool individually when you first get it. Be it from the occult store or self made, you need to cleanse and purify all ritual items. Once your item is consecrated you need to cover it up with a silk or black material or a bag made especially for the tool. You may want to magickally charge the tool with the moon or suns energies depending on the occasion and the tool itself. Like the black mirror (or crystal ball) for instance, if you charge it with the full moon energy, you will want to cover it up afterwards so it does not lose its power until you need it again.
How Long Will it Last? This question kind of relies upon you. It depends on if you allow other people to see or touch your personal magickal items. Most non magickal people will have no knowledge about a consecrated tool. Their first instinct is to naturally pick up that awesome new athame you just got from the witch store. Wrong. This would really piss me off if I had already consecrated the tool in my deity and or spirit guide’s name for my use only during Magick or rituals. Think of it as a diary. Would they want someone going through their diary and fingering all the pages and leaving all their negativity? No way, it is very personal. So too is the cleansed ritual tool. Here is another situation. You just made a really cool wand out of willow tree. You consecrated it already and the neighborhood kid picks it up to play with this neat looking stick. Well I bet the parent of this child has no clue it holds powerful energy. The kid has no idea what he holds in his hands. He/she may be considered innocent. The usual cop-out from most people (adults). This to me is still a no-no. Think of it like this, you probably went to a Christian church when you were younger right? Did anyone in that church ceremony ever get up and go to the altar and just start picking up the holy water and playing with the bottle or finger the altar tools? No they do not. They should not out of respect. This same idea applies to the pagan ritual (ceremonial tools) as well. It is very disrespectful to the owner of the tool of concern. Generally speaking though, the cleansed tool or space will not last forever. It needs to be consecrated every so often. Tools can be charged or cleansed and will last longer than places do. People change, fight, or have problems everyday. This is life in the mundane world. If you feel that your tool needs cleansed, then do it. There is no real timeframe of cleansing tools.
What is Banishing?Banishing can mean several things. It can mean to remove or rid negative energies or spirits from an object or dwelling. It can simply mean to banish a bad habit like smoking. Or some will use it interchangeably with smudging/cleansing a person from negative or harmful unwanted energies from their bodies. It can also mean to get rid of or drive someone away from your life forever. It is most often used in protective magicks. As in making a witches bottle against someone causing you harm. You can also do a simple banishing ritual. Which is sometimes called LBR. (Lesser Banishing Ritual)
How do I Perform it?Consecrating a ritual tool is pretty easy. Basically you just say a chant to your tool while cleansing it with the four elements or four winds. You can do it within a magick circle of protection or you can simply do it with just the representations of the elements (earth, air, fire, water) or similar to your beliefs. Some tools can be consecrated with just running water, smudge or a bowl of sea salt left for a period of time. My usual way is to run the object through the smoke of incense or a sage/sweet grass smudge bundle while saying something similar to this: Visualize it being so. You can do this for each element (four-quarters) or each wind/totem animal if you wish. You can change or say anything you wish to remove the unwanted energies from the tool. Be creative with what you say and rhyme if you can. Rhyming helps to remember what to say the next time you need to cleanse an object. Then you should keep the tool on you for a few nights to become one with the ritual item.
You can consecrate an area kind of the same way. For consecrating space or an area, just light a smudge and walk around the home while chanting and removing unwanted energies from the home. Call upon your spirit guide or totem animal if you have met one to help you rid your house or circle space of lingering unwanted energies. Visualize it being so.
To cleanse or consecrate a person or animal just use your smudge bundle to hover over the person while fanning the smoke towards them and chant something like: Visualize it being so. Here again just make up something you can remember easily. Once you do it a few times you will get the hang of it.
