According to Konstantinos (a nocturnal witchcraft writer) the reason crystal balls, and mirrors produce visions and symbols is because they are in fact doorways to the astral realm. When you try to scry, your astral sight and often your astral hearing will attune to the vibrations of the astral plane, allowing you to perceive what is occurring there. While scrying, the seer will see symbols or scenes of actual events unfold within the mirror or ball….sort of like a movie. Many magicians feel that scrying is not just a doorway to the astral realm, but a direct link to the Akashic Hall of Records. In the Hall of Records, everything from your past, present and future is stored there, like a mystical filing cabinet. So not only can scrying show you the future, it can show your past lives as well!

Before you attempt scrying, you first need something to scry into! I personally like to use a black scrying mirror, and I have instuctions on how to make one here. But if you prefer to use a crystal ball, then you need to find one that is free of imperfections such as scratches and bubbles. Some Witches feel that if the ball has the slightest defect, you will not get a clear picture. Perfect crystal balls are very pricey, and they are not truly needed for successful scrying. But it’s up to you whether you want to use a ball or mirror, because the techniques are the same. The following are steps to take to successfully scry:

Make sure that you set aside about ten minutes to a half an hour each day to practice scrying. Usually, you will not get results the first time you try, and you definitely won’t get excellent results unless you practice every day. Scrying takes time! The more you practice, the easier and more detailed your visions will come.

To start a session, dim the lights, and sit in a chair with your feet on the floor. Light some pleasing incense, and a couple of candles. Purple candles are great for this because the frequency of the color purple is psychic in nature. Purple will awaken your psychic senses! If you don’t have a purple candle, then white can be substituted. Place the candles in a way that it will not reflect into the surface of the ball or mirror. If the light does reflect, it might produce false images. Good candle placement would be on each side of you, or to the back of you.

Next, do some relaxation and meditation exercises. A very easy relaxation is to shut your eyes, and take a BIG deep breath. Hold it for a count of four. Then exhale for a count of four. Keep doing this until you feel relaxed. Try to clear your mind by concentrating on your breathing. Do the breathing until your mind and body tell you that you’re relaxed, and that it’s time to stop. Like I said, this is an easy relaxation technique. If you would rather meditate on a deeper level, to achieve inner peace and calm, then that is cool. Do what you know, and what you feel comfortable with.

Now, open your eyes, and hold the mirror or ball in your hands. If you are using a clear crystal ball, you might want to hold it within a black cloth. This will give the effect of staring into the black abyss of space or the sea, and will give you some good visions. If you don’t hold it in a cloth, then you could see what is on the other side of it, and be distracted. Of course, if you are using a scrying mirror it will already be black, so no cloth is needed for it.

The next step is to look into the mirror or ball. Don’t look AT the mirror, but INTO it! Do not stare without blinking. It’s ok to blink normally so you don’t get eye strain. After a few minutes, the mirror will start to cloud up. You may also see points for light within the clouds, so don’t be alarmed because these things are normal. The clouds and lights are both signs that a vision will soon be near.

After a few minutes, the clouds will clear up, you the lights will turn into symbols and/or visions. Just let them come. The visions could be about anything and everything, so at first they may not make sense. But that’s ok, because you can evaluate them later on. After you think that you have seen the last vision, the session will be over. Thank the powers of the astral realm for their assistance, then ground and center. After you return to the physical, it’s good to jot down everything you saw in your Book of Shadows, or journal, so you won’t forget.

At first, your scrying sessions will be very general. But after you practice everyday and become better, then you can ask specific questions, or try to learn about your past lives. Also, if you feel better to open a sacred circle before you scry, then please do so. A circle is not necessary to scry, but it might make you feel protected at first.
