)O( Invocation & Evocation )O(

If you have studied magick at all, I'm sure you have heard the terms "invoke and envoke" and it might have confused you a little bit....especially if you're new to Wicca/Witchcraft. On this page, I will try to explain these terms in the best way I can so you can have a better understanding of them. Once you learn to properly invoke or evoke, your magickal workings should improve greatly. |
EvocationEvocation is mainly used to conjure spirits into existence for aide in magickal workings. This can be in the astral realm or the mundane physical one. You do not bring the entity into your body or mind in evocation. But despite what most people have heard it is not always for harmful purposes. It can be used for the greater good. Any magic that is performed is neither good nor evil. It is only about what the intentions were for doing a specific magickal purpose anyway. If you are a practicing witch, ceremonial magickian or similar equivalent, then this is done quite regularly. Every time you cast a successful circle, you are essentially evoking an Elemental being, Archangel or a favorite guardian. Hence the "quarter calls" or inviting the gods to witness your rites. Whether it is a Sabbat ritual, or just simple castings of the sacred circle that you perform. Either way you are evoking something to come to your magickal working. Hopefully you have studied the entity that you are calling to the circle. You don’t want to evoke something you are not familiar with into your circle. That could cause a catastrophe in your magickal workings or your health. Try studying up on the different elemental beings, Archangels. There are several that match up to each of the Elemental directions. If you are unsure of what it is exactly you are conjuring up, then just call on the general quarter direction. It will be much safer. There are other things you can evoke as well. Spirit allies, Archangels and other ancient spirit beings. Hell, you could even invent your own entity or spiritual friend (egregore). But I would recommend researching in more detail on this powerful subject. Konstantinos writes a good study book on this and other similar subject matters entitled "Summoning Spirits". Another good book to get is "Modern Magick" by Donald M. Kraig. 
InvocationHave you ever tried invoking the god form assumptions? Don’t know what I mean? Well did you hear of drawing down the moon? I know you have. Drawing down the moon, or more bluntly, drawing down the goddess form into you. This is a prime example of invocation. Invoking simply means to bring an entity into your own body or mind. Or become that Godform or totem animal. Mostly in Wicca the Priestess invokes the Goddess into her so that the Goddess may speak through her as a vessel of power. Did you know you can also draw down the Sun? Sure can. That would be assuming God form. For instance: invoking a God deity into your rites (rituals). The god may speak through the Priest to his covenors and blessing them and the Priest. It is also acceptable and encouraged to try invoking the opposite sex God/ess as you become more experienced at invocations. Assuming god form can be quite rewarding in any of your magickal rites. It’s almost like a natural high. You will be so much more powerful in your magick and worship. Plus you will be getting into touch with your chosen deities more closely. After invocations be sure to ground yourself well. The energy raised will be tremendous, and possibly a bit overwhelming the first few times to succeed at it. Eat a light snack (cakes & Ale ceremony) afterwords and then go outside, put your hands on the bare ground and send your excess energy back to mother Earth. She will decide where to put all that energy. .* A quick note, sometimes you may not feel anything or feel like you have not received anything from the Gods. Don't be discouraged. Sometimes it just doesn't work, the timing may be wrong, or the Gods may not see fit to entering you just yet. You may need to work with them some more or you are just not ready for this amount of energy quite yet.
