)O( Choosing a Craft Name )O(

Article written by the "Authors of Magickalpair Realm" 2002

Have you ever heard people refer to themselves with such names as MoonChaser, StarDust NightWind, Magenta Rose, or other unsual names, and wondered what it was all about?? Well, in the Witchy world, names like that are usually what we call a "Craft Name", and they are a scared rite of passage. We are all born with the names our parents gave to us, or mundane names. A Craft name will distiguish us from the mundane world, and give us a little extra "ommpth" when workng magick. Please read below for more.....

Why Choose a Name & How to Do It...

First of all let me say that choosing a name other your real name is not necessary. Nope, you do not have to assume another identity to successfully work magick. Some people even refuse to pick a different and magickal name. They say that it is unnecessary.

However, choosing a magickal name can be rewarding to yourself. In that it can give you the extra "power" or a sense of confidence needed in working magick or spellcrafting. Also, It might add to your protection from someone or some thing that does not know your name. In the case of a coven, your Magickal name will be a way that the coven will identify you. The very act of choosing a name can be fun and as well as part of the preperation in becoming a Wicca/Wicce or witch, coven or no coven.

There are numerous amounts of people with the same craft names (especially on the net) so try to pick a name that is not used very much or not at all. You can use the same names but try to be creative.
A good way of picking the craft name is to think of something that influences you or really stands out to your thoughts. "Silver" is used quite a bit and so is "Amber" so what should my name be then? Well whatever suits your liking. It can be from anything that you can imagine. A famous Goddess. Maybe an old Norse name? Or a Greek God? Maybe something you just made up according to your numerology chart?

Humm, there's an idea. Well let's see my name is "Marlevane". So maybe I should figure out how many letters are in my name and match with my new craft name. Sure, why not? It sounds good to me.

Let's start by finding our Birth number using numerology. Let's see now, If I were born on August 28th 1972

I could figure out my number down to "single digit" by adding like so...

8.28.1972 = 8 + 2 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 2 = "37"
3 + 7 = "10"
1 + 0 = "1"

Therfore my personal Birth number is "1". Cool, now I can try to match my birth number with my craft name.

How 'bout using this nifty little chart below:

Numerical Chart.

So next I need to see if "Marlevane" will match my Birth number "1". Use the chart to see each letter of your new craft name. Then match it's correspondent number and add the number together. Don't forget to reduce your numbers to single digits.

M=4, A=1, R=9, L=3, E=5, V=4, A=1, N=5, E=5

Add each number together now.

MARLEVANE = 4 + 1 + 9 + 3 + 5 + 4 + 1 + 5 + 5 = "37"
3 + 7 = "10" 1 + 0 = "1"
8 28 1972 = "37" 3 + 7 = "10" 1 + 0 = "1"

Wow, my birth number does equal my craft name! How about that?!?

Once you get your Craft name, you can use it when you dedicate yourself to the Higher Powers, in spells, or even in the internet world, if you so choose. You can inscribe it upon your magickal tools so that they are truly yours. (And it looks cool too. You should see my sword!) Blessings to you, and good luck in finding your own, unique Craft name!
