)O( Ancient Celts )O(

As Written by Marlevane of Magickalpair 03/05

I have much fascination with the ancient Celts and the Druids. I am in no way an authority in ancient history, however, I have studied them a lot lately to cure my own curiousness and to help understand the new path I have been chosen to follow by the Gods. My wife and I have been moved to study and follow the path of the ancient Celtic peoples and this page will reflect some of these beliefs. We will write in more detail as soon as we get a chance to do so. Until then, enjoy what we have to offer...

The Celts

The ancient Celtic people were actually made up of three distinctive groups. The Milesians hailing from Spain and Egypt. The Gauls hailing from France and Belgium. The Irish Celts from Ireland. They were all considered under the name of Celts. The name doesn’t really imply a specific race; it describes a certain culture of people. Generally speaking though there were 7 Celtic nations in total.

The Celtic people were great warriors both Men and Women would fight for land and their freedom. They fought 3 main battles in their era. They were fierce tall fighting machines whom many people feared. Amongst fighting with the Romans (Julius Caeser) which is well known, they also fought amongst their own kind (other Celtic tribes).

Some tribes would fight naked as this they felt would add to there power and also be closer to their war gods. Another type of tribe called Picts, would paint themselves with a blue dye called Woad.

The Celtic Priests of Pre-Christian influence were truly powerful and mysterious Druids of the Celts. They were considered holy and could stop battles by their mere presence on a battle field. They were advisors to the captains and lawyers, Priests, astrologers and many other titles.

Writings

Although we don’t have many writings from the Celtic peoples, their artifacts and spirit live on. These people did not leave behind ancient texts for us to read about them. Save for a few bardic stories such as the "The 4 ancient books of Wales". Bards such as Taliesin and some other known Bards did leave behind poems like "The Battle of the trees".

They were an oral based society. This does not suggest that they were illiterate, they were not. They preferred to keep such sacred writings to themselves. In their time, when Christianity sought to convert the celts religion for power, the writings they made were done as as non-magical. Probably because the church had forbidden them to write anything pertaining to magick because they feared their power and seen it as a threat. The Bards were the ones who kept their stories and battles alive for generations to come. The Bards told stories and sung songs to carry on the legends of these great people. Traveling and roaming the country sides full of poems and songs. The writings that were left behind was from Roman Julius Caesar, the Greeks or the enemies of the Celts.

Their Druids did use a form of physical communication using ogham letters carved into stones, and magickal items or weapons. Runes were later used, however Runes are originally Nordic and thought to be invented by Oghma (Odin-Wotan).

Communication was done through the use and knowledge of the tree alphabet. The Ogham writing was symbols or letters that were derived from Roman letters. Each of the 20 letters represents a specific tree that was sacred to these people. The Ogham was thought to be invented by the Irish Celts around 300 AD. The tree alphabet is read from bottom up and consists of short lines cut crossways to a longer line or edge. It is also thought to be a secret sign language. The Druids and the Bards were the ones who would have used this system.

The Ogham system is found carved into the standing stones of Europe and onto sticks. Some are thought to be markings of burials. Below is a chart of the letters and their corresponding tree.
